“Why Your Aquarium Is Getting a Lot of Algae (and How to Fix It)”

🌿 Why Your Aquarium Is Getting a Lot of Algae (and How to Fix It)

Algae is one of the most common challenges aquarium keepers face — and while a little is normal, an overgrowth can quickly make your tank look cloudy, green, and unhealthy. At Rockland Aquarium, we often help customers understand what’s causing algae problems and how to restore balance naturally.

💡 What Causes Excess Algae?

1. Too Much Light
Leaving your aquarium lights on for too long or placing your tank near a sunny window can fuel algae growth. Most aquariums only need 8–10 hours of light per day.

2. Excess Nutrients
Algae feed on nitrates and phosphates — byproducts of fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying plants. Overfeeding and irregular water changes can cause nutrient buildup that encourages algae blooms.

3. Infrequent Water Changes
Without regular water changes, waste and nutrients accumulate, creating the perfect environment for algae. A weekly 20–30% water change helps keep parameters stable.

4. Overcrowding or Overfeeding
Too many fish or too much food increases waste production. Feed small portions your fish can finish within 1–2 minutes, and remove any leftovers.

5. Weak or Inefficient Filtration
A dirty or undersized filter can struggle to keep up with waste and organic matter. Make sure your filter is properly maintained and appropriately sized for your tank.

🧼 How to Control and Prevent Algae

✅ Reduce lighting time — Use a timer to control your light schedule.
✅ Increase water changes — Stay consistent with your maintenance routine.
✅ Use live plants — They compete with algae for nutrients.
✅ Clean your glass and decorations regularly.
✅ Add algae eaters — Fish like plecos, otocinclus, and Amano shrimp help naturally manage algae growth.
✅ Upgrade your filtration — Consider options like Aquael Ultramax, Fluval FX6 or Seachem Tidal filters for better performance.

🌊 Finding Balance

Algae isn’t always bad — it’s part of a healthy ecosystem. The goal is balance, not elimination. With proper lighting, feeding, and maintenance habits, you’ll keep your aquarium looking crystal clear and vibrant.
